Adriaen Brouwer was a 17th-century Flemish painter born in Oudenaarde. He is known for his vivid portraits of ordinary people, peasants and soldiers in scenes such as pub scenes. He was a master at depicting expressive facial expressions. His works were studied and appreciated by Rubens and Rembrandt, among others. The annual Adriaen Brouwer Beer Festival, every last weekend of June, is named after the painter. This free folk festival attracts many visitors every year.
