Adriaen Brouwer was a 17th-century Flemish painter born in Oudenaarde. He is known for his vivid portraits of ordinary people, peasants and soldiers in scenes such as pub scenes. He was a master at depicting expressive facial expressions. His works were studied and appreciated by Rubens and Rembrandt, among others. The annual Adriaen Brouwer Beer Festival, every last weekend of June, is named after the painter. This free folk festival attracts many visitors every year.
Walking tip: Adriaen Brouwer got his own statue in Kruisstraat.
Margaret was born in Oudenaarde in the early 16th century as the illegitimate child of Emperor Charles V and a local maid. The girl was baptised in Pamele church. Shortly after her birth, she was taken away from her mother and brought up at court. In 1529, Emperor Charles officially recognised Margaret as his daughter. She later became governess over the Habsburg Netherlands.
Restotip: The restored House of Margaret of Parma currently serves as a restaurant-wine bar.
The story goes that when Emperor Charles V visited Oudenaarde, the city guard Hanske de Krijger, who was on the lookout, had fallen asleep after drinking too much Oudenaarde beer. Charles V and his entourage were therefore not met at the city gate. According to a sixteenth-century legend, the emperor would therefore have ordered the city to put glasses in its coat of arms. In reality, however, the emblem in the coat of arms is the Gothic letter 'A' of 'Audenaerde'.
Walking tip: From the west side of the market square, you have a great view of the gothic town hall. Hanske stands at the very top.
